Aims and Policies

Computational science is an emerging and promising discipline in shaping future research and development activities in both academia and industry, in fields ranging from engineering, science, finance, and economics, to arts and humanities. New challenges arise in the modeling of complex systems, sophisticated algorithms, advanced scientific and engineering computing and associated (multidisciplinary) problem-solving environments. Because the solution of large and complex problems must cope with tight timing schedules, powerful algorithms and computational techniques, are inevitable.

The International Journal of Computational Science addresses the state of the art of all aspects of Computational Science with emphasis on computational methods and techniques for science and engineering applications. For this, the International Journal of Computational Science will focus on publishing articles describing recent fundamental contributions in the field of Computational Science. Computational Mathematics,  Scientific and Engineering Computing, Computer Science, and their  applications are the essential topics being covered. The main goals of establishing this journal reflect the following two-fold:

  • To provide an outstanding channel for researchers and scientists from Computational Mathematics and Computer Science as basic computing disciplines, researchers from various application areas who are pioneering advanced application of computational methods to sciences, engineering, arts and humanities fields, along with software developers and vendors, to contribute and to disseminate innovative and important new work, and to shape future directions for research, as well as to help industrial professionals apply various advanced computational methods and techniques.

  • To provide rapid review and publication of important research results in all fields of Computational Science. In order to substantially reduce the time to publication as compared to traditional journals, we have established the following policies within the editorial board for processing a submitted paper:

         (1) Each papers will be reviewed by at least two independent experts;

         (2) The submission will be sent out to review in 3 days;

         (3) Reviewers will return the review comments within 21 days after receiving the paper;

         (4) The final decision for each submission will be made within one month;

         (5) If an author is willing to revise his paper promptly, then a 3-4 month submission-to-

              publication period is realistic.

The main reason for establishing the above review policy lies in that we  have found that if you ask reviewers if they are interested in a paper before sending it to them, it is rarely a problem getting it back on time. Reviewers usually put an article on their "stack" and then get to it sometime near the end of the reviewing deadline. As we all know, the actual process of reading and reviewing an article is typically accomplished over a few days, and thus a 3-week reviewing period should be workable. (we also note that in fields such as biology, reviewers are regularly expected to return their reviews in a week or two.) The 3-week review period will be extended if the paper is longer than usual. Furthermore, the editorial board of this journal has arrived at such a consensus.
